The area in Dalmatian hinterland between Zadar and Šibenik is called Ravni kotari with the most fertile land in the whole country.
Stankovci is a village in Ravni kotari, located along the state road D27 from the direction of Benkovac (18 km) towards Šibenik (25 km). The place has excellent transport links because it has a direct exit (Pirovac) from the highway A1 Zagreb-Split and the proximity of Zadar and Split airports.
It is 13 km (Pirovac), 18 km (Vodice) and 30 km (Biograd na moru) away from the nearby coastal towns and the sea. Stankovci is also attractive due to the proximity of nature parks (Vrana Lake) and national parks (Krka, Paklenica and Kornati).
This is an area of rich cultural and historical heritage. The settlement originated in the valley below the fortress of Velim, the scene of battles between the Venetians and the Turks in the 16th and 17th centuries. Well-known historical names from this village are the first Croatian saint, St. Nikola Tavelić and the writer Fr. Toma Babic.
Sights that testify to the rich history of this area are:
The remains of the castle (tower) and the church of St. Catherine in Budak
Old Croatian Church of St. Peter in Morpolača
Medieval Church of St. Ivan with a bell tower and a tower in Banjevci
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Podrebača
Chapel of St. Nikola Tavelić in Velim
Church of St. Antun Padovanski in Velim
The parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1885 neo-Romanesque style) in the center of Stankovci is known as the “beauty” of Ravni kotari
